Why Birth Mothers Need Post-Adoption Support
In 2008, I made the courageous decision to place my daughter for adoption. As a Native American birth mother, I encountered unexpected challenges in finding support within my tribe and at the state and federal levels. Despite the hurdles, my daughter's adoptive mother became an invaluable presence in my life, fostering a supportive relationship that I cherish deeply. While my experience was positive, it highlighted the lack of post-adoption support for birth mothers in similar situations.
Understanding the Birth Mother's Journey
All birth mothers share a common experience of loss and grief as they navigate the complexities of adoption. Despite the love for their children, birth mothers face difficult decisions due to various personal circumstances.
Whether it's financial instability, addiction, or other challenges, birth mothers make the courageous choice to place their child for adoption in the hopes of providing them with a better future.
Advocating for Post-Adoption Support
It's alarming that despite the significant sacrifice birth mothers make, there's a lack of nationally funded programs to support them post-adoption. While adoptive families receive resources and counseling, birth mothers are often left without adequate support to cope with the emotional and practical challenges post-placement.
It's time to advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of birth mothers, providing them with the necessary resources to recover, find employment, and rebuild their lives.
Empowering Birth Mothers: A Call to Action
Birth mothers deserve more than just recognition for their selfless choice; they deserve comprehensive support to thrive post-adoption. It's imperative that we match the resources available to adoptive families and provide comparable funding and assistance to birth mothers.
